2025 International Impact Book Award-Winner

El General: In the Shadow of Giants

Award-winning Mexican-American Author and Historian, Brian Kryszewski de Ybarrondo blends his passion for history, crafting compelling narratives that explore family legacy, 19th century Mexican history, and the political figures who shaped a nation.

He blends rigorous historical research with immersive storytelling to illuminate the complexities of 19th-century Mexico. His novel El General: In the Shadow of Giants—recipient of the International Impact Book Award for Biographic Historical Fiction—has been recognized for its contribution to Mexican-American narrative heritage. A descendant of General Ignacio Mejía, Brian draws from personal lineage and archival depth to create the La Patria es Primero series, where historical fact and narrative fiction intersect to reveal the lives, decisions, and legacies of the figures who shaped a nation.

Brian's academic background in Mexican-American studies began at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas.  His early contributions to historical scholarship include a 1991 publication with the Texas State Historical Association in the Handbook of Texas, offering an in-depth exploration of four small Texas towns bypassed by the railroads. That same year, he presented his paper, "Leaving Friends, Family, and Property to Come to Texas at the Time of the Mexican Revolution," as one of three undergraduates at the First Annual Mexican-Americans in Texas History Conference at the Institute of Texan Cultures in San Antonio.

Now, through his La Patria es Primero series, Brian continues his mission to preserve and illuminate Mexico’s fight for sovereignty—one book at a time.
